ThermiVa Q & A
by Daniel Lebowitz, MD
What is vaginal laxity?
Vaginal laxity refers to a decrease in the elasticity of the tissue of the vagina. A lax vaginal wall can make sexual intercourse uncomfortable, unpleasant, or just lacking in sensation. Vaginal laxity may lead to poor self-esteem and sexual dissatisfaction.
What causes vaginal laxity?
Pregnancy and childbirth — especially multiple births, large babies, and vaginal delivery — can lead to stretching and trauma that breaks down the elasticity and strength of the vaginal wall. You may also experience some laxity due to the natural aging process and changes in hormones that occur with menopause.
What is ThermiVa?
ThermiVa is a procedure in which Dr. Lebowitz applies radiofrequency energy via a specialized hand piece to the affected tissue. The heat energy stimulates the development of new collagen, a natural compound that strengthens tissue. You experience immediate tightening and the long-term buildup of collagen.
ThermiVa does no damage to the external skin as the heat energy penetrates to the deeper tissue to stimulate rejuvenation.
What are the benefits of ThermiVa?
Vaginal rejuvenation with ThermiVa tightens the skin of your vaginal wall. The improved concentration of collagen may also:
- Reduce problems with incontinence
- Stimulate greater lubrication
- Improve sensations during intercourse
- Enhance the appearance of the vagina
- Restore your libido
What should I expect during a ThermiVa procedure?
You lie on an exam table during the procedure. Dr. Lebowitz applies the gentle heating energy to the area in and around the vagina. Most patients find the procedure quite tolerable, describing it as delivering a sensation of warmth, with no pain. Dr. Lebowitz controls the level of the heat and increases it gradually, keeping you comfortable throughout the procedure.
You have no need for anesthesia or downtime. You can return to daily activities following a treatment and even resume intercourse the night of a session.
How many treatments of ThermiVa do I need?
Dr. Lebowitz develops a customized treatment plan to help you get the results you want. You may notice changes after just the first treatment, but optimal results come from multiple sessions. Typically, three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart bring about excellent tightening results.
Some women also opt to get maintenance treatments every six months to a year to maintain the maximum results.
